The Kapparot (atonements)
It is written : « Search for Hashem while He is accessible, call for hashem while He is close! » (Isaïe 55,6). The Talmud’s sages (Rosh Hashanah 18a) explain that this verse refers to the ten days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur called Asseres Yemei Teshuvah (the ten days of repentance). In fact ,Maimonides affirmed that, if Teshuvah is desirable all year long, during those ten days it is immediately accepted by Hashem.
During this period, it is customary to increase study, prayer, good deeds as well as gifts to Tzedakah.
On eve Yom Kippur, it is customary to do kapparot (expiations), during wich, a rooster (a hen for a woman, 2 hens and 1 rooster for pregnant women)is swing around above one’s head while saying : « This is my exchange, my substitute, my attonement, this one shall go to its death, but I shall go to a good, long life, and to peace ».
This website allows those unable to go to a physical Kapparot site. to easily perform the mitsva.
This initiative is in accordance with the Rabbanim and true to jewish law.
