The Kapparot (atonements)

It is written: "Seek the L-rd while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near" (Isaiah 55:6). The Sages of the Talmud (Rosh Hashanah 18a) explain that this verse refers to the ten days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur, known as the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah (the Ten Days of Repentance). Maimonides states that while teshuvah is desirable all year round, during these ten days it is immediately accepted by G-d.

During these days, it is customary to intensify Torah study, prayer, good deeds and charity (tzedakah).

On the eve of Yom Kippur it is customary to perform the Kapparot (atonements): a rooster is taken (women take a hen, and pregnant women two hens and a rooster) and swung three times over the head while saying each time: "This is my exchange, this is my substitute, this is my atonement. This one will go to death, while I shall go on to a good, long life and peace."

This website allows anyone who is unable to travel to perform the Kapparot to easily fulfill the Mitzvah. This initiative was taken with the approval of Rabbanim and in accordance with Jewish law.
